Help me give my students Lakeshore Learning Children of the World book set, It's a Mulitcultural World! hardcover library, Differing Abilities book set and picture globe.
At our school, we firmly believe that all children, no matter what their cognitive levels are, have the capacity to learn. Through this belief, we as teachers are constantly finding creative and new learning approaches to help our students be successful.
This year I am working with twenty amazing 4-year-old preschool students attending our full day preschool program.
These students are either attending preschool for the very first time or transitioning from half-day to full day. The students come from various cultural, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds which lends itself to a diverse classroom environment. The students also have different learning preferences whether it is visual, kinesthetic or auditory.
Regardless of their backgrounds and their learning preference, all of the students are eager to learn and explore their world around them. My goal is to give them as many tools as possible to become active and engaged learners. So far this year has been fantastic! These students have been so excited receiving items that we have had funded through DonorsChoose.org. I love seeing the excitement on their faces as they explore new materials that help enhance our learning program. We are always grateful when a project gets funded!
My Project
We are a culturally diverse classroom. While I have some materials that celebrate cultural diversity, I am finding that I could use more materials within the classroom. I am starting with books that not only encourage the students to embrace cultural and ability differences, but books that actually talk about the different countries that represent the students within my classroom. I am asking for a picture globe as well so the students can begin to have some sense of the different countries of the world and how far (or close) they are to where we currently live.
Teaching students to embrace their own culture as well as tolerance for other cultures and other ability levels is the beginning of preparing our children to be culturally responsive, respectful citizens of the world.
The materials I am requesting will help. All of my students enjoy looking at books even if they are not reading yet. Just by looking at the pictures together and having me read the text to them, conversations begin as well as the questions. I also have a lending library within my classroom and it would be nice to include the books in the lending library in order for the students to check them out and share them with their parents at home. When we do talk about other areas of the world, I am able to bring up a map on our computer system, but I feel being able to look and touch a globe is more hands-on for my students and will help them experience the world and miles between countries a little bit easier than me running the mouse over the computer screen.
