Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a junior high school in the rural northeastern Texas Panhandle where I serve 150 students in Technology classes. Over 60 percent of our students are in the free and reduced lunch program, and we are a multicultural campus demographically. Our economy has been devastated as a result of the drastic decline in the oil and gas industry and catastrophic crop and forage damages caused by drought and unexpected weather events. There are not funds through my school district because the property tax base significantly dropped due to the oil and gas and agricultural losses.
We introduced robotics this year, with no budget, and have 6 donated robots and 4 loaned robots.
My students are creative, enthusiastic, and display an interest in robotics that continues to amaze me every day. They have shown a phenomenal work ethic since day one. I want to provide these incredible children with robotic equipment for First Lego League Team competitions, the only sport where every student can become a professional. Please help us obtain robotic equipment for these amazing children. They are just waiting for the needed equipment to pursue their dreams.
My Project
We started a Robotics program this year at PJH with no budget. We have been able to buy competition robots through donations. I have over 70 more students that have expressed an interest in working with Robotics, an incredible response!
This project will add 10 Spike Robots that will be used as part of the 6th Grade Technology Applications classes.
It will allow me to team two students per class to one Spike Prime robot. The students have shown an insatiable interest in programming and designing robots. They have exemplified incredible work ethics, leadership, and a willingness to come in after-hours and on their lunch hours to work on robotics. In over 25 years of teaching, I have never seen a program that has captured the hearts and minds of my students as has the First Lego League program. Its core value is character and leadership. It is giving our students skills that are desperately needed in the workforce. Technical expertise in robotics and programming is exploding on the job market. Any donation is an investment in the future of our community, the future leaders of our community, and an avenue for these students to excel and compete in a very competitive job market when they complete their public school education.
