Each year we have more and more students who have families struggling to make it and who often have to move in with relatives after a job loss. There are some families that are homeless and need more assistance. Many also come from military families. We have many cultures represented at our school. The students at our school really want to make good choices and we have a staff that is working to help guide students. Our staff continually goes above and beyond to help their students. The school is based on the idea that we are all part of the same team, and we work towards helping all students. Almost 100% of certified staff work as mentors during their personal time to give students who need extra help the attention they need. We are working hard to make sure our students are prepared for the future. We have added a Makerspace and are now working to extend our STEAM clubs, and we are encouraging girls to participate in STEAM activities.
My Project
Children love to work with technology! Our students now each have an iPad and we have added enough Osmo bases for a classroom to be able to use them at the same time.
Students need financial literacy skills as a life skill.
It is important for them to learn how to manage money. The traditional methods of learning money skills is not very motivating to students. We want our students to be eager to learn these skills.
In addition, money skills are part of the math curriculum and district standards. We want to make sure we meet or exceed the local and state expectations in math. Our school is ranked as one of the top schools in the state, and academic success is very important to us.
Osmo Pizza Co. is an interactive game that allows students to set up their own pizza company. This allows real world money skills. The games can also work together, which makes the learning with other students much more engaging. There are great videos available to help learn how to use the game for those who are new to the game. It is also applicable for most all grades at the elementary level and middle school.
This project will help extend learning to the home environment. We would like to be able to have some sets of the game to go home so that students can practice money skills at home. Students are all taught how to use the game at school, so it would be easy for students to use at home, even if parents do not understand the game. The students the struggle to grasp the concepts could check the materials out and use at home to help develop financial literacy skills.
