Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At Pinkston High (that also houses previous Edison Middle School members and they merged together) we don't have a large population that enjoys reading for fun. I want to make reading fun for this population that would otherwise not have access to books/supplies/rides to the library.
I tutor students in the 7th and 8th grade, and I want to foster a love of reading.
I want to see them immersed in a good book. I want to have deep, meaningful discussions about YA books that contain topics that coincide with their personal experiences.
I want to build a sense of community...books aren't something to avoid...literature can be life changing...friendships that might not have otherwise been generated...all while providing a safe outlet and activity for these students.
My Project
The reading level of most students at this school is across the board mostly a low level. Bringing interest to reading will not only help them as far as general reading, but will spread to other academic subjects.
Students will see an increase in confidence as they move forward in the club, have a chance to have their voice and opinion heard, and have a place they feel like they can belong.
I don't know if there'd be another chance for students to be able to get together consistently and safely, so I want to provide that for them. Giving chances for growth in literacy outside of just the classroom structure class provides a place where they feel more in control and more free to express their questions, opinions and thoughts.
