My Students
Our school is located in a very small rural area. The students are spread out over five different towns, and some travel to school on a 45 minute bus ride through very wooded areas. In our school we have 28 students spread over 8 grades. We are a close knit school and many of our students have been together for many years.
This year our school has been working hard to create a positive school environment.
We have initiated a Mindset Monday. Mindset Monday is set aside to provide learning activities to expand our student's understanding of the power of a growth mindset, and that through effort and perseverance all students can learn and be successful. We also reinforce growth mindset throughout the week in our teaching. We have created Ranger Rewards. Ranger Rewards are given when we see students showing growth mindset behaviors, such as great effort in their work or recognizing that they may not be able to do a math skill Yet! We have also used ranger rewards to reinforce quality student behaviors. It is a very workable way to recognize the quiet students who, without being asked, does something kind.
My Project
Our school plans to use these student friendly, high interest items in our school store. As a whole school, our school decided to pilot a School Store and Ranger Rewards to recognize those students who show growth mindset and quality student behaviors. Students are recognized for growth mindset behaviors and quality student behaviors. Students are then able to take their Ranger Rewards and "purchase" (exchange for) items in our School Store.
All of the items chosen are popular items with my students.
They are items that can that help recognize growth mindset and positive attitudes. The slow release squishy, the liquid bubbler, and the snake fidget cube are also items that engage the student's senses. This can be helpful to keep students engaged in their learning.
We have found that students enjoy exchanging their Ranger Rewards for items that provide recognition of their positive growth mindset and quality student behaviors. They do help motivate students to continue to create a positive student learning environment. One goal for next year will be to increase our student involvement and possibly run the store. Our school would like to continue our work of increasing growth mindset and quality student behaviors and these items will provide that opportunity.
