My students need pillow forms for an upcoming sewing construction project. They have just finished designing 3D Art Portfolios for Advanced Placement credit, so they are transitioning from 3D design work to sewing construction.
My 3-D Fashion Design students are incredibly creative, and I am continually amazed with the ingenuity they demonstrate as they put a project together. As a teacher in a school considered low-income/high poverty, my students face challenges in and out of the classroom. To help reduce the barriers of those challenges, I want to help them transition from their 3D Art portfolio creation to project construction. With a limited budget, I do not want the challenge of poverty or district funding to deter my students from the opportunity to create projects involving sewing construction
I am reaching out to DonorsChoose to seek funding for a sewing construction project that will help my students as they transition away from their 3D Art portfolios.
The portfolios are due to College Board in early May and students will return to project construction which includes sewing. We need pillow inserts for our first post-portfolio project which will involve creating a removable pillow cover
Understanding and using basic sewing skills will help my students in the long term. This project will allow them to get creative as they make a pillow cover that is removable. New pillows can spruce up a space, so they will make a single pillow removable pillow cover to be filled with the pillow insert. Students will have the opportunity to make additional pillow covers for use with the pillow inserts. This is an easy way to redecorate their bedroom or other living space, so this project allows them to learn a life-long skill.
My students have limited funds and limited opportunities to modify their space at home.
The intent of this project is to show them how a simple pillow can change the look of a living space.
