My students need a positive learning environment where respect, responsibility, safety, kindness, and collaboration are celebrated. Rewards help my students celebrate these positive behaviors.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
High school students are not only learning rigorous academic content and preparing for college or a career; they are also learning to navigate the real world and how to operate as independent individuals within that world. My students are eager to live and interact within the real world outside of our high school's walls, and they are working on the skills they need to be successful.
My students do amazing things every day!
I want to encourage my students to be positive members of our community by being respectful, responsible, safe, kind, and collaborative. In order to do so, I'm working to teach them these skills, and I'm making sure they receive the recognition they deserve for displaying these behaviors. I know that my efforts will help my students conquer the world beyond high school, and I'm excited to watch them grow.
My Project
Pillars of Pride is my team's approach to Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS). Our mission is to cultivate a positive, safe, and supportive environment where we teach and recognize expected behavior through a common language that honors diversity in our building. Our vision is to become a learning community where the commonalities and complexities of all students promote a positive school culture. What this means is that we are working with our students to promote positive behavior, and we want to recognize our students that display these characteristics.
Our students glow with pride when they are recognized for their efforts.
Students acting with respect, responsibility, safety, kindness, and collaboration are acknowledged and celebrated. Students are motivated to be positive members of our school community, and they are working hard to grow into positive members of their greater communities upon graduating from high school. Pillars of Pride makes our school a more positive learning environment and promotes student growth.
Our students are acknowledged for acting in respectful, responsible, safe, kind, and collaborative manners via Pride Bucks. Students have the opportunity to spend their Pride Bucks at our school Pride Store on items such as hot fries, chocolate, and potato chips. Pride Bucks reinforce positive student behaviors and note specific feedback on those positive behaviors. This is a research-based initiative that helps our students learn and display positive behaviors and to develop intrinsic motivation associated with them. Thus, although the tangible items that donations will help purchase consist of candy and snacks, the true initiative being supported relates to supporting positive student behavior.
