This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are incredible, powerful individuals. They work hard to overcome personal struggles in order to be as successful as possible. They are curious about the world and are always hungry to learn more. They fight for their education every day, and they build each other up to make sure no one gets left behind. Our school community is comprised of 99% minority students, with 99% of them receiving free or reduced lunch. Many of them have been affected by Hurricane Katrina as well as gun violence in their neighborhoods.
My students deserve the most amazing experiences possible.
They don't give up, even when things are difficult, because they know that education is the way to a better future for themselves and their communities.
My Project
Students across the world get the opportunity to dissect animals as a means of gaining a deeper understanding of Biology and how life works. Just because my students may not have all of the privileges of others, does not mean they do not deserve this experience. Every year, when going over the course syllabus, students excitedly ask, "Are we going to cut open frogs??" They know that dissections are an incredible experience and they really want to participate in them.
When students dissect, they not only have the amazing experience of acting like a doctor, but they also gain an immediate understanding of how the body works, something they are not able to get from a textbook or lecture.
My students will get to really dive deeply into something that interests them, and they will be able to dissect a variety of different organisms so they can make comparisons among different animals. For many of them, this will be their only opportunity to dissect, and I want it to be as special as possible.
