Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My English Language Learners (ELLs) are smart, funny, and creative. On a day-to-day basis, they are striving to reach the stars in a country that has given them the opportunity to soar to new, unimaginable heights. They come from 15 different countries, and some are part of our federal refugee program.

My ELLs really enjoy learning and participating in academic challenging activities; however, they are a disadvantage in comparison to other students in our city, state, and nation.

They are inner-city students who attend an urban, public school where ninety-nine percent of the student population is composed of minority students who fall below our nation’s poverty threshold. For this reason, they all qualify for free or reduced price lunch.

This project will provide the opportunity for my ELLs to engage skill-building practice activities in vocabulary, conventions, grammar, writing, and reading comprehension every day of the school year. These learning activities will, in turn, help reinforce their language skills, as new skills are being acquired. Students will be able work on foundational language skills as key language arts standards are being covered to help close the achievement gap.
