Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a teacher of a wonderful group of diverse students who are from an urban environment. Our school is an internship/project based school. The students learn through developing group or individual projects.
How do you meet the needs of all different types of learners in Math, History and Art? My students and I believe we can do this through making quilts. Quilting can teach students, in a hands-on way, geometry, American history, art (including the color spectrum) and diversity. The students would be able to design their own quilts using the geometry skills they will learn as part of the curriculum. Also, they will learn about the Oregon Trail and the role quilts played, how quilts played a role in the Underground Railroad and the quilt's role in a bad economy during the thirties. Finally, a quilt is a piece of art and we will learn about color value and how it affects the whole quilt. There are amazing opportunities ahead with a quilting curriculum.
To implement this curriculum my students will need two sewing machines. The machines will help us to piece the quilts together. It is important to have a good machine, since we will have many quilts to piece. Once the students learn how to use a sewing machine they will be able to create more quilts or other projects.
It isn't often where you can find a curriculum that meets the needs of so many students while building necessary skills to prepare for college. Your help will ensure that my students are learning in an authentic way that meets their needs and builds their knowledge and skills. Your donation will make a big difference!
