Looking at the past and seeing the future is what inspires greatness. Teaching in a low income, rural school district poses unique challenges. Our school has a large number of high needs students that grows each day.
I teach 4th grade in a community that is being rebuilt by the EPA due to lead contamination from mining. In the current state of our nations economy, my students are facing increased poverty and limited resources. Parents in our community's main concern is food and shelter for their children. This doesn't leave much time for academic or emotional support from parents. Along with these areas students do not see proper goal setting or achievement. This is essential for success later in life.
I am asking for a quality digital camera for students to monitor and record their progress through various projects over a two year time period. The students would set goals and digitize their progress from the fourth grade through fifth grade. Before students move on to the middle school each student would create a digital portfolio to share with their peers and parents. This will be an inspiration for the students to keep improving and show them that they can set goals and reach them. We will be landscaping the grounds around the outside of our school, creating animal research projects, growing an indoor garden in our greenhouse, participating in the science fair, and creating and implementing a community improvement project. We want our students to be able to look back over their last two years in elementary school and be able to see, through digital pictures and video, that they made a difference in their community and met academic proficiency through their efforts.

Through a digital portfolio students will be able to truly reflect on the work they did personally and with a group. You will be helping to foster a goal driven and reflective generation for our community.
