Every day, I am surrounded by the most amazing students! Even though they come from a variety of backgrounds, including race, religion, and family structure, we all work together to create a unique learning experience; we work hard at instilling a love of learning and exploring that will last a lifetime.
My students are truly exceptional!
They persevere when faced with a challenge, creatively inspire our community, and believe in one another. They are tomorrow's leaders and world-changers. They are our future, and together we can help them soar to their dreams.
My Project
Learning how to write information, opinion, and narrative essays can be quite difficult for second and third graders. Add in learning new math concepts as well as new scientific investigations and anyone can see how a student can easily become overwhelmed. That is why I am requesting picture books to use as mentor texts for writing, math and science.
Mentor texts allow students to see and deconstruct concepts while piquing their interests.
For example, as I teach writing this year, I will use "Dear Mrs. LaRue," "Bedhead," "Rotten Richie and the Ultimate Dare," "Hello Harvest Moon," "My Dirty Dog," "My Crazy Dog," "I Want a Dog," "Not Norman," and "The Relatives Came," to teach not only the different types of writing but word choice, setting, and character descriptions. For math, I will use "Inchworm and a Half" and "How Big is a Foot" to begin our measurement investigation. As for science, what better way to pique interest than through vibrant picture books such as "Engineering in Our Everyday Lives," Over in the Ocean: In a Coral Reef," "Earth's Landforms and Bodies of Water," "What is Pollination?" "Flowers are Calling," "The Brilliant Deep," and "Smart Kids: Coral Reefs." Lastly, some of the picture books will be used to create STEAM-inspired investigations such as building a stronger house using "No Lie, Pigs and House Can Fly!", designing a costume to hide a turkey after reading, "Turkey Trouble," building an unsinkable boat while reading, "If You Were a Kid on the Mayflower," discovering mixtures and solutions with "Lula's Brew," building a flying airplane inspired by "Rosie Revere, Engineer," and creating the ultimate nose just like "Ada Twist Scientist."
