My classroom is in a high need community where more than half of the students are learning English as a second language. I have one fourth of my students who are receiving special education services and about 10% are gifted.
My first graders are a diverse group of students with special needs and learning English as a second language, as well as gifted students. In order to meet all of their needs in writing, I have implemented a program started by Lucy Calkins that asks students to picture a small moment in their lives to write about. This is the first year of using this writing program and the students are very eager and enthusiastic about writing every day. Having photos to accompany and inspire their writing would be only add to the excitement.
Having cameras to capture "small moments" in the students' lives would enhance their writing process and contribute to their overall literacy skills and language development. These cameras will give us pictures to notice details about and remind us about the excitement in each others' lives when we share the photos and the writing in our monthly authors' celebrations. We need 9 cameras to cover the "small moments" in each of the units of study.
This is your chance to enhance the writing skills of my students by giving them the tools to help visualize "small moments" in their lives to write about.
