On March 13 we said goodbye for what we thought was a weekend. That weekend has stretched through May 15 (if not longer). We were allowed in the building on March 17 to gather teaching materials for the next 2 weeks. I have my laptop, access to teacher manuals and platforms to reach out to my students electronically, read-aloud books, and student "textbooks".
We haven't hugged, high-fived, held hands, or chased each other on the playground in 6 weeks.
The need for routines, rituals, and normalcy is paramount at this time. We are doing our best through "online learning", but it is hard for EVERYONE. We miss being together. Seeing each other on the computer is ok, but not what everyone needs or wants.
My Project
Teaching from home is very different than teaching in the classroom. We are constantly moving, using manipulatives, and working in small intimate groups when we are physically together.
Being separated due to Covid 19 has us teaching and learning in new ways.
I now am doing whole group lessons in math, writing, science, and phonics. I have been using paper and a pencil and a whiteboard for my lessons. Trying to hold manipulatives, write, get the paper, or whiteboard close enough to the screen for scholars to see and make eye contact is very hard. This is very difficult because I only have 2 hands. I constantly have to move my computer screen so the scholars can see.
A document camera would allow me to use manipulatives, show work to students, and let the children see me all on one screen. Lessons would flow better, scholars' focus would improve as they won't watch me jumping from one place to another thus increasing learning and productivity from the students.
