Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a Title I school, over 95% of our students receive free or reduced lunch, and 84% of them are second language learners. Still, our school has an ongoing tradition of striving for academic excellence. We believe each child is unique and deserving of rich, educational experiences.
Without being aware of it, our students analyze, evaluate, and react to images they see on posters, billboards, and advertisements. Marketing directors understand that a picture is worth a thousand words. They know that a single image can convey a complex story or idea, and they see that it can also be more influential than text alone.
Unfortunately, our students are not allowed to turn in a picture instead of their writing assignment. Standards do ask students to convey their thoughts and ideas using English text. This is where mental blocks begin. They are used to living in a visual world, and now it has been taken away from them. How can they overcome this problem?
My solution is to bring a digital camera to the classroom and allow them to take pictures of the world around them. In turn, they would use their images to enhance their thinking and provide motivation towards their writing assignments. Soon, they could evoke feelings that could be worth a thousand words. A photo printer will help students have quick access to their images.
In addition, there are a great number of other uses that a photo printer may have in the classroom. Whether used to enhance their writing or provide motivation, a photo printer in the classroom can help accelerate communication, assist in teaching language, enhance presentations, and help document special moments in school.
