Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a special education teacher for middle school, which includes 6th - 8th grades. I teach resource classes for Language Arts and Math. English Language Learners (ELL) are often found among these groups of students. As we all know, literacy is linked to academic success and often life's successes.
Picture this... A person with visual impairment must somehow acquire the image of an object through other senses besides the eyes; this may be a comparable experience to a student who does not understand a region's spoken language. In contrast, the experiences are quite different but both share a similar challenge. They must learn vocabulary in order to begin language acquisition. The challenge I face as an educator is to teach grade level subjects when my students read far below their grade level.
It is difficult for students to read for learning when they are still learning to read. Recently, I discovered ELL Dictionaries at a teacher conference. They visually define vocabulary, which would enable our EL and struggling readers to acquire language. I've been dreaming about this fabulous resource for over a year! Pictures imprint an images to the brain; and as any brainy act knows - this helps with memory. The dictionaries also provides a two fold purpose as it will assist our struggling readers too. Finally, if "a picture is worth a thousand words" then I'm convinced, if it can be pictured, it will be remembered.
You are able to help our class achieve - what appears to most - the impossible. ELLs and struggling readers don't have to be left behind. They are able to learn at higher levels than often expected. You will make it possible for my students to acquire language in a fun and interesting way. Picture this... these dictionaries will allow ELL students and struggling readers to access literacy in all of their classes.
