Please help my third graders learn about their neighborhood and world! I am requesting disposable digital cameras, photo paper, and ink for the phenomenal group of third-grade students I teach in the South Bronx, NYC. Through using these cameras, I hope to provide students with the opportunity to portray their community as they see it. By taking cameras into their homes and community, students will be given the opportunity to document their lives from their perspectives. I am requesting digital cameras as opposed to film cameras because, through a separate grant, our school has acquired laptop computers to which my students have access. We will use these computers to print both "straight" and digitally manipulated pictures. We will then use these pictures as a springboard for both non-fiction and fiction writing pieces about culture, citizenship, and what it means to be a member of a community, as outlined by the New York State Third Grade Social Studies curriculum. This project is designed to incorporate photography, writing, social studies, and cultural understanding, but it is unique in that it uses students' own perspectives and daily lives in order to do this. In addition to meeting academic goals, the project is intended to empower the students with a sense of cultural awareness and identity.
In order to see this project fulfilled, we need:
