Mrs. Sanford from Detroit MI is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need books to help in their mission to make bullying behaviors socially unacceptable. They also need a digital camera and case to document their learning.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach an energetic, inquisitive class of 31 boys and girls. They reside in a neighborhood where poverty and crime is very evident. Most students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. They are awesome and truly trying to beat the odds and have a better life.
My students are thoughtful and caring children, but bullying does occasionally occur in our class.
I have discovered the main cause of a bullying situation is usually lack of awareness of diversity and knowledge of strategies to use in these types of situations. My students are little sponges, eager to absorb all they see. Many of the adults present in their lives make poor choices. My students witness this and believe this is the way to handle a difficult situation. I firmly believe I can change this by promoting character education and educating my students about cultural differences.
My project is designed to use character education to build a strong foundation so students clearly understand the difference between right and wrong. Upon this foundation students will use some of the books I have requested to develop an understanding of people with disabilities and of different cultures. All of this is essential in putting a stop to bullying. The other books I requested will be used to start a dialog with the students about the effects of bullying and also provide strategies useful when confronted by a bully. The digital camera will be put to use by students as they work in cooperative groups to document their learning. The camera will allow them to apply creativity through use of photos as well as writing to complete their anti-bullying project.
This project is very important for my students.
As their teacher I have observed the lack of understanding and inappropriate responses they have when faced with something they don't understand. As their teacher I know them well. I recognize this reaction is caused by a lack of knowledge about people of different cultures and abilities. This project will provide the knowledge and awareness my students need to allow their true inner goodness to shine!
