My students walk in to school every day with a smile on their face and eagerness in their hearts. They may not come from the same backgrounds, cultures or socioeconomic statuses, but they come together in my classroom as one big family. We are located in a high poverty district with lots of obstacles to overcome, but my students do not let that hold them back.
Each and every one of them is determined to be successful in school.
Many of these students do not have books they can read at their homes, so the books I have in my classroom are sometimes the only books they get to read.
My Project
My students and I will read a different picture book every day. During the read aloud, we will focus on skills that we are currently working on as well as vocabulary that will enrich students comprehension and knowledge.
These books will be a wide variety of various authors, themes, topics, fiction and non-fiction.
I want to immerse my students in all types of stories and books.
After we have read all the books for the week, the students will then vote on their favorite for that particular week.
We will graph the results and keep it displayed all month. Once a month ends, we will look at our top favorite books and discuss what it was that seemed to draw them to those books more than the others as well as compare and contrast the books. Each month we will start our process of graphing again with a new set of books for that month.
The books that we have already read will be put into a basket for students to choose to read at their independent reading time.
