Picture Perfect STEM Class: Inspiring Deeper Thinking With Picture Books

My Students

STEM jobs are some of the most in demand and high paying careers available today. As a K-6 STEM teacher it is my job to build student interest in these areas, while also helping my students to develop the skills they will need to be successful in a STEM career. I work hard to provide my students with meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that encourage them to apply what they've learned in memorable ways.

My students are a diverse group of enthusiastic and inquisitive learners.

Forty-five percent of our student population is learning English as a second language (ESL) and ninety-nine percent of our population qualifies for free lunch. Many of my students do not have access to books, sensory toys, and other educational materials that encourage critical thinking at home. My students come to STEM class excited to "play", but leave with critical thinking and problem solving skills that will help them find success in their futures.

My Project

These picture books will help to provide students with background knowledge for our STEM lessons while also enhancing their developing vocabularies and improving their reading comprehension skills. Reading about historical events such as hurricane Katrina will help students to better understand the impact that severe weather can have on a community. It will also lay a foundation for our hands-on activity on levee building.

After reading about the sun in Summer Sun Risin', my students will have the opportunity to explore the effects of sunlight on Earth's surface using a digital infrared thermometer.

These are just two examples of the incredible STEM lessons that these books will support.
