Students at this rural high school are receiving more opportunities to use technology like laptop computers and LCD projectors during elementary, middle and high school for projects and presentations. These students depend on clip art from software programs and pictures from the Internet to enhance their presentations, projects and class work with visual examples. Many students do not understand that these same visuals can be found in the state of South Carolina and our community. Students in my class have one digital camera that is available for them to check out. I purchased this camera off of Ebay, due to the daily use of the camera by students and myself and lack of technology funds.
The purpose of this project is to make science more relevant to students through the use of digital cameras. Digital cameras will enhance classroom activities through the collection of subjective data during laboratory experiments and other activities like creating food webs and chains to take pictures. Downloading the pictures into PowerPoint will allow for students to engage in more effective classroom discussions and allow for community resources to be used in presentations.
This project will incorporate the following activities:
? Students will capture lab observations through both pictures and written commentary to increase the student's ability to discuss data and compare results for validity and discuss potential errors.
? Students will incorporate at least 1 picture of people, places and organisms found in South Carolina relevant to their project in 3 of their six projects in biology. Physical science students will incorporate at least 1 picture in 2 of their four projects.
? Students will use the cameras in class to take pictures of their work to display for other students to see.
