I teach in a low-income, high-poverty elementary school in Wyoming. Many of my students come from single-parent families and are often faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom. Many of my students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch at school and most take advantage of the free breakfast offered. In spite of these overwhelming challenges, they are excited about being at school each day.
My students are intelligent, creative, and they absolutely love to read.
They are eager to learn and they love to move. They love to play games. They are friendly, talkative, and want to know as much as they can about the world around them.
When they walk through the door of my classroom, they know they are in a safe environment. I focus on what they can do, what they want to do, and what they want to know. My students love it when we dig deep into a topic. I cannot control what happens at home but I can guarantee that when they are in my classroom, it is a safe, positive learning environment.
My Project
My students love to read. Whether a student is learning to read, is being read to, or is reading independently, reading is the foundation of learning. However, our classroom library needs some refreshing. We need exciting new titles that will spark interest. I have been checking books out from the public library to bring to my classroom and my students want to read them again!
These books will give my students some amazing new choices.
Each book was carefully chosen based on my students' expressed interest. There are books we have read out loud as a class. There are books for the emerging reader and there are books for he more experienced, independent reader. They will have books that interest them as well as new books within their reading levels. With fresh new titles to choose from, my students will grow stronger in reading and continue developing a love of literature.
