Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a second grade dual language classroom. My students are a mixture of native English speaking students and native Spanish speaking students. The majority of students in our school are of Hispanic heritage.
Many of my students come from low-income homes with limited resources at home such as technology and books.
This is why I allow students to borrow items from my classroom whenever needed. These students are learning to be proficient in two languages, which will be very beneficial for them in the future, but it can be challenging to meet the needs of all my students.
My Project
The picture dictionaries that are being requested are made by different vendors. These books offer different themes so my students can build their oral and written vocabulary in English and Spanish. Students work on their reading and writing skills on a daily basis.
These materials will allow my students to work in partners to help each other acquire new vocabulary and to put it into use.
The book baggies are meant for students to keep their center materials organized so they can spend as much time as possible using the picture dictionaries. Visuals are key for students who are learning a new language.
