Mrs. Chavez from Chicago IL is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need books like Wonder by RJ Palacio, Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Peña, and other titles to support social emotional learning in a middle school ELA class.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My talented middle school students are from the far southeast side of Chicago. My students love to read and to explore the world around them. They read for enjoyment and to become better readers, writers, and thinkers.
Over the last several years, my students have transformed from reluctant readers to authors.
Books provide my students with opportunities to see the world from new perspectives, captivate readers with wondrous tales, and create a culture of readers through high interest and culturally relevant texts. It has been exciting to see their transformation!
Middle school can be a challenging time for students due to physical and psychological changes because of adolescence. As students tackle these changes, it is critical to develop social emotional skills needed to manage emotions, engage in positive relationships with peers, effectively communicate opinions, make responsible decisions, and empathize with others.
The books selected on the list below will serve as model to support social emotional learning skills such as: self-awareness, social awareness, relationship skills, responsible decision making, and self-management.
A book will be read out loud to students in the form of a read aloud to activate prior knowledge related to the social emotional skill being taught. Following the reading, students will receive explicit skills instruction and will engage in a collaborative activity such as role playing, discussion, or video clip analysis applying their social emotional learning.
For example, after reading "Last Stop on Market Street," students could receive explicit instruction on accepting diversity and identify ways in which the characters accept differences in the story. Following the reading, students can create skits to illustrate how they accept diversity in other settings. The skill will be continuous practiced throughout the week. The other books will be used in a similar fashion to support the development of other social emotional competencies.
Supporting this project will help create a healthy and safe community that fosters social emotional learning. Developing social emotional skills will ultimately support students to become responsible and empathetic citizens.
