My Project

As we welcome New Mainers to our community, we also welcome their children to our school. These children often come with little to no English, some having never had formal schooling before. and some have gone through traumatic experiences.

Our students are eager to welcome our New Mainers, and having a collection of picture books to help them better understand the experience of their new classmates would be very helpful for all involved.

This collection barely scratches the surface of what our asylum seekers have gone through before getting to our school, and what they continue to go through every day as they get settled. But sometimes a simple picture book can get through a message more than anything else.
