Help me give my students picture books that teach them how to manage their emotions. First Day Jitters, Grumpy Monkey, Enemy Pie resonate with children and encourage them to reflect on their feelings.
My students live in a rural Utah town in a neighborhood challenged with poverty. Well-meaning parents often don't know how to support learning at home. Frequently the effects of poverty manifest in a child's ability for focus and tune out distractions.
My students love learning and are committed to building a better future through hard work and practice!
Title I schools face the challenges of low-income families that other schools do not. Research is documenting the impact of poverty causes in education. Over 51 percent of students in our school receive free or reduced-price meals. Another third of them are native Spanish speakers. My students need a school that understands their needs and provides it.
Sharing a passion for lifelong learning is my underlining goal for these children. Having curiosity for the world and how everything fits together is so important for these students. Education pushes children to explore abstract concepts. Filling a classroom with ideas that stimulate curiosity and motivate learning is a never-ending challenge.
My Project
Everyone knows that school is about academic learning; reading, writing, math. Nowadays many students do not have stable home lives that create emotional intelligence--the ability to recognize feelings and respond kindly. Schools have always been learning zones for social behavior but the need to teach empathy, kindness, positive social interaction and perseverance has grown.
Addressing the emotional security of children has pushed to the forefront of education, and stories are among the most effective tools for instruction.
Through read aloud and class discussions, themes related to kindness and empathy are imagined, visualized, and role played. Children can try out the ideas and scenarios of these teaching stories in a safe environment and learn for themselves why trust is essential, how kindness is contagious, and what to do when faced with a bully.
