Picture Books That Spotlight the Difference Makers

Help me give my students picture books about the lives of African Americans who have made a difference in our world.

My Project

Picture books are an important part of my classroom. I use them to teach reading and grammar skills, to expose students to nonfiction concepts in a variety of topics, and most importantly, to help students learn in a fun and motivating way.

I plan to use picture books as part of a display that my students will be completing for a school-wide Black History Month project.

Each student will read a picture book about an African American that made a difference in the world and persevered through difficult times to become successful. They will then use this book as the starting point to creating a display board that will showcase this historical figure's life that shares important information about this person.

The 12 books that I have chosen will be a great addition to the books that I currently have access to and will help me provide enough books for each student to study a different person. Some of the people that I have chosen include singers and musicians, slaves, Hollywood icons, and sports stars.

The final projects will be displayed in the school and available for parents to view.
