My Students
My 4th grade students are part of a Spanish Dual Immersion program. Students in both of my classes are a diverse group, ranging from Special Ed to Gifted.
Meeting the needs of all of these students is a challenge. They are a group of bright and driven children. They are competitive and like a challenge. Our Dual Immersion students are disciplined and have worked hard to master 2 languages, at a young age.
My Project
COVID-19 has disrupted children's social and emotional growth, and robbed them of vital time and experiences necessary for development. My 4th grade students have not experienced a "normal" school year since since they were in 1st grade. In addition, the "Second Step", program we were using to teach social and emotional skills was banned from our district in October.
These picture books will help me teach skills like recognizing emotions, kindness, empathy, respect, and problem solving. These skills are vital to student success inside and outside the classroom, and are the number one thing my students are struggling with. Working with classmates and participating in classroom discussions and activities is nearly impossible when students don't know how to interact with each other appropriately. These books will help my students relate to and understand these important concepts in unique ways.
