I teach Reading, Writing, and Social Studies to two groups of 5th- grade students. Within this amazing group of kids is a lot of diverse identities and backgrounds. My students love to read, and we have explored the concept of "Windows" and "Mirrors' in literature. In other words, students should have the opportunity to both see themselves in the books they read (mirrors) and use them as a window into worlds they might not otherwise be exposed to.
It is my goal to explore diversity in the books that we share together and create an inclusive environment for all students.
That includes race, gender, orientation, socioeconomic status, and ability. It is with literature that our future generations will develop empathy for other people.
My Project
These books will be used to cultivate a love of reading in our class. Contrary to what people might expect, fifth graders still LOVE to be read to. There is nothing better than developing a community that loves to read as much as I do! This project will help us get started.
These books will be shared in our classroom and will be used spark meaningful conversations among my 5th graders.
It is my belief that our students have so much more to say than we might think, and they need to be given the opportunity to have conversations about these big ideas in our world today.
