Reading is an important part of our classroom. Together we will learn about ourselves and about others through stories, as well as gaining a deeper understanding of the text.
My school is in a small community in Minneapolis - it is surrounded in diversity.
My students come from families that care about their community and want their children to know more about the world they live in and the people around them. More than 50% of my students are diverse and it's important that I read a variety of books with different characters - so they see themselves and learn about others.
My Project
This has been a year of change. In a normal school year, I use picture books to teach comprehension. I started out the school year in hybrid and then moved to 100% distance learning. Picture books are still essential during distance learning.
With distance learning, it's really important as a 3rd-grade teacher that my lessons are manageable for my students, as well as engaging and interesting.
Picture books respond to all of these needs.
When I teach comprehension strategies (like inferencing, summarizing, or main idea for example) I use picture books. We discuss the strategy and I read a picture book that models the comprehension strategy. Then we talk about the strategy in the book and we practice and apply it. Picture books are highly engaging and also help to encourage a love of reading.
In trying to prepare as much as possible in a year that has required so much flexibility, I have mapped out my lessons for the rest of the year and which books I need. Many of the books on my plan I already own and the books included in this project are the ones I still need.
I would appreciate any help with this project so I can bring these books to my students, and all of our school's third graders.
