I teach fifth grade at a suburban school in Oklahoma. My students come from various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. They are a diverse and unique bunch. Each day, we strive to do the very best we can. We are a Title I school, and a large percentage of our students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch.
Our school is a learning community.
We try to meet the needs of every student and challenge them to set and reach goals each and every day.
My Project
Often times, when a student reaches the fifth grade, picture books have been abandoned and forgotten for chapter books. This, however, does not mean that a student's love for picture books has been diminished.
My project is for several quality, high-interest picture books to include in my classroom library.
Just because they are older, does not mean they do not love these books! However, my classroom library is lacking in current and quality picture books. This project will help fulfill that need for engaging picture books and get my students reading! When students are practicing their reading, whether with a friend or independently, they are increasing all of their literacy skills, from fluency to vocabulary. These books will provide them with more opportunities to practice with different types of text(not just the standard chapter books that currently make up the majority of my classroom library). Additionally, I am requesting a roll of clear contact paper that will be used to cover the books so they will be used by my students for years to come.
