My Students
We have a wide range of students in our building, all who are willing to learn! Our students come from the surrounding area, with an ever changing population. In addition, we are beginning a new literacy curriculum that is balanced and equitable for all learners. With the new curriculum comes new needs.
We need literacy time to be engaging and rich for all learners. Reading and literacy are critical skills in second grade, as they are reading independently. Second grade is often one of their last chances to learn to read, before students read to learn.
My Project
Students need rich mentor texts to demonstrate key literacy skills. When students are engaged, their learning increases. I want students to be excited about reading and one way to do that is by reading highly engaging texts. Mentor texts are used to teach theme, plot, characters, fact and opinion, asking and answering questions, connections, retell, etc.
Using mentor texts, I can demonstrate key skills and interact with the class as we read. We can revisit the book throughout the week to practice the key skills. The goal is for students to transfer these skills into their own reading and writing.
