We have consolidated six elementary schools in our district down to four. Students have been accustomed to having an average of 150 students in their school. We now have 550. Students come from a diversity of backgrounds around the district. Right now, there are 52 students that will benefit from this project. We are an inclusion school, therefore we have students in the general population, as well as students from various units (autism/ED). There are students with special needs in the general classroom as well.
No matter what level the students are on in reading, these students cherish our read aloud time.
It helps us build a sense of community and allows us to get to know each other on a personal level, just from the conversations we have.
My Project
All children need to be read to daily. However, we have no control on if that happens at home. The time we spend with the students in the classroom is what we can control. Students will benefit from these picture books because they will get the pure enjoyment of being read to. This time allows us to build a sense of community as well since we are all together. It creates some rich discussion during, and after, the read aloud time. Students are extremely relaxed at this time of the day because they aren't expected to do anything except listen. The pressure is "off" of them because their teacher is doing the reading. This allows students to continue to love reading. It's also an opportunity to get the struggling readers to fall in love with books they normally wouldn't pick up themselves.
