My Project

I am applying for a DonorsChoose project to help build my collection of picture books/mentor texts. Mentor texts can help provide students with many examples of various standards, skills, and reading/writing strategies for their own learning. Picture books are so beneficial for our upper elementary students. They can allow teaching and discussing challenging or complex topics. They are so beneficial in building schema/background knowledge and they allow our older students to connect and encourage inferential thinking in ways chapter books cannot. Picture books are also one of my favorite ways a student can study an author's writing craft.

Mentor texts can model different genres and writing styles along with grammar and conventions of writing.

Students can also learn different writing crafts through mentor text by studying the way an author uses words and different structures of writing. My goal is to provide students with a model to allow them to emulate in crafting their own writing pieces. Reading as writers allows students to find their own voices as writers as well as helping them to try different strategies and formats. When students read as writers they focus on how the author wrote as opposed to what they wrote.

Using mentor texts for reading strategies allow students to use authentic, real-world examples to think critically. Mentor text allows scaffolding and modeling opportunities between a teacher and student. Modeling a strategy provides students with a visual and verbal example of what they are expected to do. Modeling also allows students to observe a teacher’s thought process, they then imitate it until they become aware they have their own thoughts, questions, ideas, inferences. This is where scaffolding is most important. Picture books provide amazing mentor texts because students can connect and relate to them. This is also such a great teaching tool.
