I teach second grade at a rural school. Each year my second graders are enthusiastic learners, who work extremely hard all year long. They love learning and are motivated to grow. During 2nd grade they are starting to transition from learning to read, to reading to learn. We work all year to develop a love of reading. I hope to ignite a passion for reading that they will have for the rest of their lives. 2nd grade is a fantastic year!
My Project
One of my favorite memories of school as a child was sitting on the carpet listening to my teachers read. I also remember coming in from recess and lying my head down on the desk transporting myself to wherever the read-aloud took us that day. I loved read-alouds then and I still love them today, specifically picture book read-alouds.
I want to ignite my students energy and passion for reading and learning through engaging picture book read-alouds this year.
My project has books for different parts of my day that cover several different areas including reading, writing, and social emotional skills. Some of the books will be used to develop reading comprehension and others will be used to engage students and prepare them to tackle a certain genre of writing. There are also books to help students grow socially and emotionally. Students will be able to gain skills to work effectively with their classmate through examples in these stories. My goal is to use these books to help develop my students as a whole.
I have lessons and activities for each one of these picture books that will excite my students each day. This project is something that will not just benefit this year's students, but all of my students in the future. I can't wait to engage my students throughout this year using these picture book read-alouds!
