Until the recent pandemic pause, school was the place where my Title I, ENL students came to escape their overcrowded apartments. It was their home away from home where, no matter what short falls they faced at home, they were welcomed each day with a warm smile, nourishing meals, academic and emotional support, and, yes, even a hug.
Now, all that has changed; home is everything and school is an all too real reminder of what was left behind and what was yet to be realized.
In our new distant learning model, we strive to reach through the computer screens each day, to reconnect in meaningful ways and hold together the precious threads of our tightly woven community.
My Project
Reaching across the miles into the homes of my students each day has been a particular challenge for me as a physical education teacher. I service over 1200 students and have tried to reach them each day with a new and unique physical education lesson. Up to now, I have been relying on daily posts of instructional videos I create in my home. I would like to take my remote teaching model to the next level by hosting Google meets and running Kahoot sessions with my students. In order to do this, I need a laptop with a screen large enough to see full class tiles on the screen and powerful enough to handle a 30 minute live broadcast. The Microsoft Surface Pro, keyboard, and USB adapter will provide the technology needed to support this next shift in my students' remote learning experiences and raise their physical education work to the next level.
