I teach first grade in the City School District of Albany at Pine Hills Elementary School. We are in an urban district where 100% of our students receive free and reduced lunch. Many of my students have the weight of the world on their shoulders when they walk into my room on a daily basis. I encourage them in to unload that baggage and be immersed in fun, loving and engaging learning environment where they will succeed. I have a classroom full of leaders who preservere through life and learning. I learn as much from them as they do from me. In room 209 we are a family of learners!
My Project
I have students that have trouble sitting in their traditional seats and sustaining focus and attention on their learning. They are up on their knees, their chairs are pushed out making the classroom unsafe for other students. Through the donations made to this project it will give students choice within the classroom and leadership of their own learning. I want to use the wobble stools at my reading group table to increase success during small group reading instruction and allow the other flexible seating opinions to be used as student choice during our daily 5 centers. I am hoping by incorporating flexible seating in my classroom that students across the classroom will find benefits from our flexible seating options and allow for students to reach their full potential in room 209!
