I teach a class of 16 Title I students in a high performing school. We pride ourselves as a school that strives for excellence. My small class gives students who are struggling the extra push they need to get closer to meeting standards and encourages confidence along the way.
Take a look in my class and you'll see a room full of struggling learners who are giving their all to become great readers, writers, and mathematicians.
Many students benefit from being able to move or stand while they learn. By providing more flexible seating options I will be giving my students the opportunity to be the best learners they can be.
My Project
Alternative seating choices will give my students an opportunity to be comfortable - and even wiggle - while learning. Wobble stools, bean bags, and other seating options are exciting for students. Our favorite time of the day each day is Reader's Workshop. My students get the opportunity to choose a spot and read self-selected books for an extended period of time. I love this time because I love seeing their love of reading blossom. They love this time for two reasons - they get to choose their books, and they get to choose their spot. Right now their options are limited to the floor and traditional chairs. I would love to give them more options that would allow them to be comfortable and still focused on their books.
Meaningful movement allows students to be more focused rather than distracted.
Allowing for comfortable seating and movement while learning will increase student attentiveness. I have seen success with wobble stools, and can't wait to bring more options to my classroom!
