My students need the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) software and accompanying communication book with straps to have visual aids for communication needs.
Eight 3 and 4-year-olds bustle around a busy classroom, exploring the world around them, manipulating materials and learning through play and participation in carefully planned learning experiences.
All of these mini-scholars are exceptional students and none of them lack curiosity.
This is what happens in both sessions (morning and afternoon) of my half-day preschool classroom. This is the first school experience for many of my students, who represent a ethnically diverse low income neighborhood where 100% of the school's students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
My Project
My students are in need of visual aids to help them communicate in the classroom and to interact with their world. Some of my students are non-verbal. This means that they do not communicate verbally with their peers or adults. The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is a systematic way to teach a child how to communicate with someone else by handing them a picture of what they want. This program was originally designed for children with autism but can be used for other non-verbal children as well. This program is intended to provide an alternative means of communication for a child who is unable to speak with his mouth. It is not a true form of speech for the child but an alternative means that will allow him to “speak” his thoughts even if his mouth won’t cooperate.
My nonverbal students could use picture exchange communication (PECS) to begin learning the function of communication, but the PECS software and communication book with straps are needed to create the visual aids needed to implement the PECS system.
Help my students become more interactive with their world. Communication is the foundation of a functional, fulfilling, and healthy life. You can give them the gift of communication!
