My students are awesome! There are so many children in my school that love music but don't have the means to take private lessons. We are in a rural town, and most students would need to drive over a half hour to a larger town or city if they wanted to take private music lessons. I do as much as I can to give them lots of great musical opportunities that they wouldn't otherwise have, such as going to the symphony, learning about different musicals, going to sing or play in regional choirs and bands, taking field trips to the National Music Museum or to see a professional orchestra, and even hosting special music assemblies where performers have come to play for the school.
I want students to have fun with what they are doing in my classroom, and then learning will take place even if they don't realize it.
We love instruments in our classroom. Ukuleles are a new favorite. We also love xylophones, classroom instruments, recorders, tone chimes, and bucket drumming!
My Project
My students love being able to play melodies on their own. We have been working a lot on our Orff xylophones and metallophones, but with up to 24 kids per class and only eight xylophones, it is hard to take turns and make it work, especially in the age of COVID! I recently started letting kids use the one piano in our classroom, and they love it. This project would give a few more kids the chance to try the piano, as well as more kids being able to play individual xylophones without having to switch and sanitize so often in between turns.
