Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am teaching middle school students who are excited about playing and creating music in their first music class! EPAPA serves approximately 200 middle school students in the East Palo Alto community. Our students are 68% free and reduced lunch and 98% first generation college students. It is EPAPA's vision to ensure that all of our students graduate with the ability to leverage college to create a more just world. One way we are approaching this vision is through offering a music class for all of our students.
2017-2018 was the first year music was offered at EPAPA and for a majority of these students this year is their first time even playing an instrument!
Students are learning how to play the piano, the guitar, and the drums, as well as read, write, and compose music. Our students are excelling at performing and creating music, and they are ecstatic to be learning new ways to express and challenge themselves.
My Project
Last year the students in my class had to put our keyboards on regular classroom tables. These were not adjustable and were not conducive to learning or playing the piano. Improper keyboard height leads to difficultly playing and can be painful for the students back and wrist. We need help purchasing keyboard stands for each of our keyboards at EPAPA. The keyboard stands will allow students to play the piano at the proper height for them leading to a much more pleasant and successful experience. It may seem boring but having the proper physical set up is crucial to allowing students to feel comfortable while playing and will foster a life long love of playing music.
