More than half of students from low‑income households

My students need an exercise ball, drumsticks and a bucket to hold the ball.
We teach in a low income, culturally diverse district with many special needs students. Within this city community there is limited outdoor space for our students to be physically active, or make music without disturbing the neighbors.
Our students love music and are very energetic!
We would like to channel that energy into a positive, fun learning experience that includes bringing arts and physical education together. By fusing music and aerobics together, we can meet that goal in both the gymnasium and the stage.
We are looking to combine fitness and music in a way that will teach our students to think on their feet to the beat. Using drumsticks and an exercise ball standing in a bucket, we will have students moving, dancing and playing to the beat of different styles of music. This cross curricular activity can help improve the mental and physical health of our students as they drum out and rock out to the music.
This activity will be used as a physical education unit in the gymnasium as well as a staged performance for the community.
It is an activity that the whole school can participate in, all the way from kindergarten through third grade.
