Physics Structural Design and Testing

My Students

My students are primarily 10-graders enrolled in Physics. My school encourages all 10 graders to take physics, so my students come from all interest levels and backgrounds, not just the 'elite'. Many students come to my class with hesitation and nascent confidence. Our physics team works tirelessly to build interventions into our course to ensure student success in a caring environment.

Most leave with greater confidence and state that physics was was of their favorite classes.

Tenth-graders are often seeking their own identity and aren't sure if they want to be excited about learning anything anymore, it may not be 'cool' to be smart. They learn that not only is it OK to be smart, but that really stretching themselves to learn can be fun.

My Project

Learning in-class or at home in a primarily on-line delivery mode limits hands-on experiences where students can practice what they have been learning. Building and testing balsa-wood bridges provides a mental break from regular homework and other learning experiences. Students work in small groups to design, build, and test balsa-wood truss bridges.

Students love seeing how much weight their bridges will hold and earning 'bragging rights' for doing well.

There is an element of competition that sparks students' interest and engagement.

In a separate experience, the spectrum tubes allow students to quantitatively observe the visible spectrum.
