Our district has one of the most diverse populations in the state. We have students from various races, religions, cultures, abilities and economic status. Many parents move to our area because they know that our district is committed to helping all students achieve.
Students with these diverse backgrounds and abilities are in my classes together and it is up to me to level the playing field.
I have some with high achieving parents who prepare their children to do the same. I have others who may have difficulties because of a language barrier, family situation or a learning disability. I want to provide as many opportunities as possible to make sure when my kids leave my classroom, they are prepared for what is ahead.
My Project
I am asking for Wall Coasters, Viscosity Tubes and Calculators to be used to help understand some of the main concepts in physics. These items will provide a fun and engaging way to learn about energy, forces and motion. Plus, students have fun designing and building models. That is a win-win.
The Wall Coasters kit allows students to design and test their own roller coaster and investigate the factors that may affect velocity.
We will also look at the amount of potential vs kinetic energy on the coaster. Finally, it is also a great way to demonstrate Newton's laws of motion.
The Viscosity Tubes contain a bubble suspended in a liquid that travels through the tube at different rates. These will be used to help us calculate velocity and acceleration. The calculators are needed to do those calculations.
I always tell my kids "In my class, we don't just read about science, we DO science." I want students to see the fun side of physics by giving them hands-on opportunities. These lab materials will help us DO science and reinforce what is often a difficult concept for middle school students. Thank you for considering my project and my kids.
