Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
How many teenagers do you know who would come to school on a Saturday for some extra physics?! My students may have grown up in poverty, but they don't make excuses and are extremely motivated to learn.
At our school we believe in challenging and exposing EVERY student to rigorous subject areas.
Therefore, every 11th-grader takes physics at our school. Most of my students are high-poverty. Large class sizes are a challenge to my students and me, but we make the best of the situation. I also teach one section of Advanced Placement (AP) physics. Last year was the first time an AP science course was offered at our school, and this year 33 students answered the call to challenge themselves.
Despite the obstacles my students face, they are motivated, intelligent, mature, and eager to learn! 97% of our 2009 graduating class was accepted to college. Even more importantly, 85% of these college-bound graduates will be first-generation college students.
My Project
My students need large mirrors, lenses, and a laser ray box so they can clearly see optics demonstrations. What our classroom needs most is exciting demonstrations that are big enough for a room full of students to see. One demonstration I've always wanted my students to experience is laser ray optics. Anyone who has taken a college physics course remembers this, and I want to give my students an authentic college-level experience.
With the supplies I have requested, my students will see how curved mirrors and lenses reflect or refract light to form images. They will have a better understanding of how their own eyes and glasses work. These memorable demonstrations provide the motivation necessary to learn a difficult subject.
When I first introduced demonstrations into my classroom, student interest in physics exploded!
Each week kids would ask me what demo we were doing that week. I have a very restricted budget, but it is my goal to give my students an authentic, rigorous, experience-based science experience. I would not be able to do this without your generosity
