Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a teacher in a low-income, inner-city school region with a large population of immigrant refugee families from a variety of Latin American countries including Cuba, Puerto Rico, Nicaragua, Honduras, and several others. Our school is a Title I school. My students are faced with many challenges, both in and out of the classroom.
Many students in our school qualify and enter our school through the Head Start Program, which is available for children who are from families with incomes below the poverty guidelines, children from homeless families, and/or families receiving public assistance.
Last year, our school, students and their families were affected by several hurricanes. Some families lost their homes and had to relocate into our school community/district. Regardless of their challenges, though, the majority of the students are very determined and eager to succeed. In spite of their personal experiences, most of my students are very active, enthusiastic learners who possess a thirst for knowledge.
My Project
My project goal is to benefit, inspire, and help my students not only emotionally and physically, but to provide them with an opportunity to disconnect from video games and television as they focus on their health and wellness while engaging in fun play with peers in order to improve their overall physical fitness.
Research shows that play and engaging in physical fitness activities can help build character and even motivate kids to do better in school.
The middle school value ball pack (soccer balls, footballs, playground balls and basketballs), giant pompom balls and board with markers can make a positive impact on my students' health, wellness, fitness and academic goals. With this in mind, we have requested the play gear to enhance our existing equipment already available in our athletic department. This equipment will help students become fit and confident regardless of their level of athletic ability.
The board and markers will be used to display a physical activity schedule with group rotations for the week. By engaging in sports activities using the requested equipment, the students' general health and wellness will be boosted. It is my goal to motivate and inspire play and athletic participation and improve my students' overall health, wellness and physical fitness.
