I teach a class of twelve severely and multiply handicapped students. We have many goals as a class and as individual students. We are working on following directions, manipulating in any environment, behavior in public places and physical and occupational therapy goals. Bowling would be an excellent opportunity for our class to work toward these goals on a regular basis, and it is a chance to work together outside of the classroom. We have attempted several trips traveling to a Brooklyn bowling alley, because this was within our means. But, after several failed trips and many hours on a hot/cold bus, we decided it was in our best interest to postpone our trips until a better venue was located. Another teacher in my building was funded through Donors Choose to go to the nearby Chelsea Piers. This facility works very well with our groups and gives a generous group discount, even so it is still too expensive for our class. The lanes are just around the corner, and this would give us all morning once a week to work on our goals. Our speech, occupational and physical therapists could afford the time out of the building. It would be an opportunity for our students to both learn and have fun while working on individual goals.
