My students need help in learning to set goals and accomplish those personalized goals this can be done by experiencing the mental and physical challenges of a climbing wall.
I teach at a wonderful elementary in a small rural district. Our building is small enough that everyone knows everyone. Physical Education is always a fun rotation class. We offer PE to all K-5 students. These students do not have much of a chance to explore the world past the edges of our small town. Many of our school families face daily struggles. More than 50% of our school family is free and reduced lunch students. This physical education class is a place where students can release some energy, learn about their bodies and experience success conquering tasks.
My students are excited about learning, playing and challenging their bodies and minds.
They love coming to physical education class and learning about teamwork, determination, getting healthy and learning new strategies they can use in school and outside of school.
My Project
Gets kids active and making it fun can help prevent the prevalent concern of childhood obesity. A climbing wall can offer this opportunity for students. The best part is that climbing is such a fun and engaging activity that most kids forget they are also getting in a workout! The climbing wall helps build confidence and teach goal setting habits.
Half of climbing is mental, and because it’s an individual sport, goals and accomplishments are very personalized.
For one person simply getting on the wall might be a huge breakthrough. Other peoples’ goals might be to get to the top of the wall or finish a difficult route. Although, it is an individualized process, encouragement from classmates is a bonus. It is very easy to measure success in climbing.
A school rock climbing wall is a great opportunity to teach students the importance of responsibility and risk management skills while in a safe and supervised environment. It has been proven to improve memory and cognitive skills which can filter into the regular classrooms and life. Climbing requires focus to find the right body position, balance, and movement to unlock the puzzle-like sequence to get up the wall.
