New York City is known as the “melting pot of the world”. Why? Because men, women and children of all different races and cultures call NYC their home. My school is no different. The vast spectrum of cultures within the walls of the building make my school a “melting pot” of learning. Within all schools, there is one subject that mixes all of the ingredients together, a spoon that stirs the pot, and that subject is Physical Education.
The children of my school have been without a Physical Education program for several years.
Classroom teachers have had to adapt their curriculums and make time for Physical Activity in order to give their students the time they need to stretch and move around. I’m happy to say that those days or over! The students will now have the opportunity to use the beautiful gym inside their school for improving their health, fitness, sports related skills and academic performance.
My Project
Physical health directly correlates to a student's mental and emotional health. Starting a Physical Education program from scratch is a wonderful opportunity for the students to explore different ways to stay healthy and learn a bunch of cool sports and activities as well. The goal of a successful Physical Education program is to create athletes that are both physically fit and skilled in whichever sport(s) they decide to pursue in and out of school. Students will also learn how to think critically, collaborate with classmates and work on their social skills in a safe learning environment.
The equipment obtained by this grant will secure the students' physical and emotional safety, as well as provide them with the opportunity to improve their health and overall well-being.
The whale skin balls, bean bags and soccer balls can be used a variety of ways that will allow the students to practice skills like throwing, tossing and catching, as well as soccer and other kicking activities. The bowling pins will provide targets that will help the students improve their accuracy with all of these skills. The mats will provide a safety element to the curriculum that will encourage students to leave their comfort zone because they know their safety is being looked after. The exercise posters and equipment will inspire the students to become more physically active and show them that exercise can be fun, as well as great for your overall health. The floor tape, poly spots, hula hoops, cones and pinnies will be used for management of the class so that students are spread out around the gym evenly in order to minimize injuries. In order to keep the equipment in good shape, the mesh bags will be used to separate and store it all securely in order to maximize the lifespan.
