Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a proud third grade teacher at a suburban school with a high low-income population (approximately 60% free and reduced lunch recipients; Title 1 qualified school program) and an extraordinary number of students from socially disadvantaged and English Language Learner homes. Five of my 19 students have Individual Educational Plans for special education services.
Thinking back to your elementary school experience, you most likely remember your time amidst the exciting activity of physical education. You may have been fortunate to have an actual PE teacher, or an itinerant PE teacher; or you may have been fortunate to have a school with ample equipment to provide invigorating physical activities. My students love the time we spend doing movement activities, but our resources are limited and the few activities we have (a soccer ball, four aging orange cones, several jump ropes, and two rubber playground balls) are really losing the sparkle of inspiration! Obesity and diabetes among young children is growing at an alarming rate, and I believe classroom teachers can help to prevent this trend by providing just fifteen minutes of activity each day. We may not have outside PE teachers, but we can be sources of inspiration and activity ourselves, given proper resources.
We would very much appreciate and enjoy some new PE equipment that would provide us with a variety of movement activities promoting balance, teamwork, simple motion, and direction following. Our budget is worse than limited, it is non-existent. We must rely on the generosity of donors such as yourself to help us gain access to quality products that will energize our physical learning experiences that may just spark a lifetime of interest in getting and staying fit.
Please consider making a donation to our project which will provide us with hours upon hours of physical experience...and fun! Your contribution will enrich the lives of 19 young third graders as well as this one very motivated teacher. An added bonus is our willingness to share with other classes, especially our special education buddies, in activities that we will undoubtedly grow to love and crave. Your donation may just prevent obesity and other health problems for some important youngsters.
